Mosque fund to receive MVR3.1 million from Algerian businessman

An Algerian businessman who visited Maldives as a tourist has decided to donate $200,000 (about MVR3.1 million) to the mosque fund.

Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said today that the Algerian businessman visited the Islamic Ministry yesterday, obtained information on ongoing projects, and decided to pay $200,000, which is 20 percent of the cost of a ten-storey building currently under construction by the Ministry for the Waqf fund.

He said that the Islamic Bank will pay for the remaining 80 percent of the building.

Shaheem also noted that Waqf fund is expected to receive more donations at the OIC Summit in Saudi Arabia, which will commence on Sunday.

The Wagf fund, which was opened to provide financial assistance to mosques, has so far received MVR15 million in donations. Of this, MVR4.9 million has been spent on renovation of mosques.
