Leader of government aligned Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel Nasheed) has been presented with his letter of appointment as the new Maldivian ambassador to Thailand.

Nasheed was officially appointed the new Maldivian ambassador to Thailand by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in a function held at the President’s Office this Wednesday morning.

The official appointment comes 10 months after he was given approval for the new posting by the People’s Majlis.

Nasheed won the approval of the People’s Majlis with the unanimous vote of 70 parliamentarians on June 13, 2017.

The official appointment comes after a Maldivian embassy in Thailand was opened in January, this year.

A former Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) officer and teacher at Dharumavantha School, Nasheed served as parliament representative for the Nolhivaram constituency from 2009 to 2014.

He also served as Chairman of the joint Maldives-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Nasheed joined DRP after leaving Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Soon after Nasheed joined DRP, internal conflict led some within the party’s leadership to defect to MDP. He was elected leader of DRP, and has remained in the position since then.
