This is the time for international community to help Maldives: Yamin

Abdullah Yamin, Parliamentary Group Leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and MP for Mulaku Constituency, has called upon the international community to help the Maldives financially, if it really wishes the Maldives well.

Speaking at a live program at DhiTV tonight, Yamin said that the Maldives is in dire need of financial assistance from the international community to set aright the financial position of the nation.

Yamin said that he and his party welcome the initiatives by diplomats from the international community who have visited the country in order to find solution to political problems facing the country and to help establish an environment where the interests of the Maldivian people would be protected.

“Diplomats from the USA, EU have visited us, and one from the UK has visited us a number of times. We have a resident High Commissioner from India, and we have seen many others including those from the UN. They all wish us well. They visited us after 7th February, and we accept that they have in their agenda the protection of our interests. As of now, what I want to tell the international community is that, if they really want to help us, and to do good for us, this is time for them to lend us some financial assistance. If they wish to help secure a good future for the Maldivian people, I call upon them to arrange for financial assistance urgently needed to run this State”, said Yamin.

Yamin, who is the Minority Leader at Maldivian Parliament, the People’s Majlis, said that the Maldivian people will, on their own, do what they need to do to solve political problems and to develop the judiciary, and that the international community can help the nation with these issues if such help is needed.

“The work of national inquiry (to investigate regime change on 7th February) is something that we have the capacity to do. No nation in the world would employ foreigners as members of such commissions when similar issues are handled amongst them. However, we have even done that to comply with the pressure of the international community. We did it in order to ensure a diplomatic solution. If the international community really has our best interests in their agendas, then what they should do is to financially help us”, Yamin repeated.
