The Police have said that former President Mohamed Nasheed, when summoned yesterday for the investigation of a case against him for inciting violence against law enforcement officials since 29 May 2012, gave his own statement instead of answering the questions posed by the Police investigation team.
The Police said this via a press statement issued today.
The statement states that despite being summoned at 14:00, Nasheed arrived at the Police Headquarters with his supporters at 15:00 yesterday. Upon arrival at the Police Headquarters, Nasheed was informed of his legal rights during the investigation process.
Nasheed requested to hear all the questions before he answered any of them, and when the questioning began, he requested to provide his own statement instead of answering the questions.
Nasheed stated that he did wish to cooperate with the investigation; however, refused to answer the questions contending that the Police failed to clarify the allegations against him.
Nasheed continued to insist that the allegations were unclear, even after the investigation team repeatedly explained the crime he was being accused of, and the articles of the Law it was based on.
He then proceeded to discuss with his legal team and write a statement, and handed it over to the investigation team to prepare it as a statement provided by Nasheed. Once done, he signed the statement.
Meanwhile, after yesterday’s meeting with the Police, Nasheed’s legal team has also stated that the Police’s allegations against Nasheed are unclear.
They have also claimed that Nasheed was summoned to Police not because he had committed a crime, but as part of a PR campaign by the Police.
