Spokesperson: President Yameen not attempting to flee abroad

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is standing steadfast in executing the duties bestowed upon him by the people, and allegations he is attempting to flee abroad is false, says Spokesperson at President's Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali.

With the political situation in Maldives in turmoil following the Supreme Court order on Thursday night for the immediate release of opposition political leaders, rumors have been spreading that President Yameen is planning on travelling abroad, to Singapore.

Spokesperson Muaz tweeted that the talk was all false, and that the picture of a ticket being spread in social media, purportedly belong to President Yameen, was falsified.

Muaz said the rumors were a deliberate attempt to spread fear and panic within the community.

The Supreme Court has ordered the immediate release of all opposition political leaders, and has ordered the re-reinstatement of the 12 deposed MPs to their parliamentary seats.

The opposition has been holding rallies, protesting over alleged attempt by the current administration to delay enforcement of the court order.

Attorney General, Mohamed Anil has commented that the State was following due process, as advised by the Chief Justice.
