Phone call information is being collected: CNI

Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) has said that information of phone calls of some involved persons is being obtained for its investigation.

CNI member Dr Ibrahim Yasir said at a press conference at Muleeaage today that meetings had been held with the Telecommunications Authority to obtain phone call recordings and phone logs of some persons involved in the coup.

“We are facing some difficulties in obtaining the phone call recordings. They don’t have any regulations on handling this information, so they can’t provide us some of the information,” Dr Yasir said.

He said that CNI receives considerable cooperation for its investigation, but two institutions have still not provided information.

CNI Co-Chair and Singaporean retired Judge G.P. Selvam said that the CNI will present its report to the government on 29 August, and reveal it to media on 30 August.

He noted that reports on the transfer of power published by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and other groups will be considered when the CNI compiles its report.

He also informed that former MNDF Brigadier General, and current Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam had provided his bank statement to the CNI, and also consented to it being published.

Also, while Shiyam is the first to provide his bank statement, several others had agreed to share their bank statements with CNI.

Information has been provided to the CNI by 269 persons, and interview arrangements for 16 more persons are in progress.
