Shifan: Police will not let history repeat itself

Police will not let history repeat itself with criminals roaming free in the streets of Male’ City, says Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan.

Maldives Police Service stated earlier that the biggest priority for the authority this year is to maintain security during the Presidential Election and events related to the election.

Spokesperson Shifan said in an interview to “Sun” that the authority forecasts heightened tensions leading up to the election. He said the authority will not allow history to repeat itself, not matter what happens.

“It is our responsibility whether its 2018, 2019, or 2020 to provide sufficient safety and security to every Maldivian citizen, no matter what the situation. We will do everything necessary to maintain security within the community,” said Shifan.

He said that the police were not political, but were charged with ensuring a safe and secure environment to each and every Maldivian citizen. He said the police will therefore not let the situation of the country escalate, as has happened in the past.

Shifan said Maldives Police Service has investigated all major crimes which took place in the country in 2017, and sent it for prosecution. He said few countries had a 100 percent clearance rate as was achieved by the authority in 2017.

“Solving cases, small or big, and providing reassurance, is carried out systematically and is a perfect example of things the police do for the future of the country,” said Shifan.

He added that the police will not stand by as Maldivian citizens are murdered mercilessly. He said such criminals will be brought to justice, no matter how well they hide.
