Ministry vows to strengthen security measures for students

Ministry of Education has pledged to put in place more security measures for the protection of school students.

Speaking to “Sun” this Wednesday, State Minister for Education, Ahmed Shafeeu said the ministry has put in place more security measures for school students in collaboration with the security forces.

The ministry’s pledge to strengthen security comes after a Thajuddin School student and Dharumavantha School student were both physically assaulted.

The Thajuddin School student – a 10th grader – was attacked with an iron rod by a group of individuals who entered the school along with parents as the morning session ended last Tuesday.

The Dharumavantha School student – a 14-year-old boy – was attacked on the streets as the morning school session ended this Wednesday.

State Minister Shafeeu said parents of school students have been issued “parent identity cards” in accordance with the school security policy established in 2017. He said that parents of school students in some of the State schools in Male’ City were required to produce the card in order to enter the school. But that it was impossible to check each and every card when parents enter the schools in large crowds.

“What we can do next is to seek assistance from police and rely on intel to check whether any suspicious individual enters the school area during school hours,” said Shafeeu, thanking the police for their assistance in maintaining security around schools.

Shafeeu reassured the public that the Ministry of Education will take all necessary measures to ensure safety and security of school students.
