Disruptions in operations of the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital have now been resolved, reports Noorul Islam International, the company in charge of running the hospital.
Disruptions in operations of the Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital had led to Ministry of Health taking over running of some of its operations.
80 percent of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital is owned by Noorul Islam Educational Trust of India, while the remaining 20 percent is owned by Maldivian citizen Ali Usaid.
Conflicts between the two shareholders led to disruptions in the hospital’s operations.
Ministry of Health recently gave Noorul Islam 10 days to guarantee the conflict will not disrupt the hospital’s operations.
The company, last Friday, sent a letter to the ministry disclosing its plan to ensure smooth running of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital.
In the letter, Managing Director of Noorul Islam, Faizal Khan said the company’s Board previously consisted of just him and Usaid, but that the company was unable to hold any Board meetings because Usaid did not attend the meetings.
He said that the company, at the instruction of its attorneys, therefore held a Special General Meeting on January 10 during which the company passed special resolutions.
An official from Noorul Islam who spoke to “Sun” said that shareholder Usaid was sent notification for the Special General Meeting, but that he did not attend the meeting.
“He previously said he will not attend any meetings. But we held the general meeting after sending him the notification. We adhered to all procedures,” said the official.
However, Usaid reported to “Sun” that he did not receive notification to attend the Special General Meeting. He said his refusal to attend any meetings was due to questions over legal status of the Noorul Islam Educational Trust, which he has submitted to the Ministry of Trade and is now awaiting a decision for.
Noorul Islam reported to the ministry that its Board of Directors has been increased from two to five. The three new directors were nominated by Noorul Islam. Two of the directors are from India, and the third is from UK.
The company secretary of Noorul Islam has also been replaced by a Maldivian law firm.
Noorul Islam, in its letter, expressed confidence in smooth running of Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital in adherence to its agreement with the Ministry of Health in light of the new changes.
