Compared to the year 2016, statistics have shown a low crime rate in 2017.
While the Maldives Police Service publishes a daily report on the cases submitted to the Police, looking at 2017 as a whole, crime has gone down by 5 percent.
Statistics from the police show 782 cases of street violence reported in 2016 while only 770 in the year 2017.
Looking in to thefts, 2017 saw 3503 cases compared to the 3617 cases of 2016. However there were 716 cases of mugging in 2017 where 2016 had 662 reported cases. 2017 also saw 2038 cases of drug use compared to the 2378 reported cases of 2016. A great amount of drugs were also seized in 2017 with one police operation seizing drugs worth MVR 10 million.
Compared to the reported cases of sexual abuse in 2017, the year saw 417 cases compared to the 467 of 2016. The year also saw 279 cases of domestic abuse.
Police statistics show 2105 cases of traffic collisions, a drop of over a 100, in 2017 compared to the 2242 cases in 2016. And 518 cases of fraud was reported in 2017.
With seven murders taking place in 2017, all the cases have been through the investigation phase and sent to trial.
