Towed motorcycles to be sold abroad as used metal

Maldives Police Service has said that the unclaimed motorcycles being towed by the police for different reasons are going to be sold abroad as used metal.

While the police have made the remark, yesterday, over 500 unclaimed motorcycles towed for illegal parking were taken to Thilafushi to be disposed of. Police said that they were vehicles in their custody for over two months.

Police Media Official said that a private company has been contracted for the project. However no details were disclosed regarding the nationality or name of the company.

Vehicles being disposed include those that were unused for a long time and those that were unclaimed after the owner had changed. The police official said that vehicles in this round of disposal include vehicles towed in 2009.

Yesterday, MP for Vilimale' constituency, Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said that instead of disposing, the vehicles could be reconditioned and sold to other countries. And said that a good market for reconditioned vehicle include African countries.

According to Police Regulations, owners of vehicles being towed have to be notified within 72 hours and give 60 days to claim the vehicle.
