Drogba: Coming to Maldives feels like coming home

The culture of Maldives is very similar to the culture of Ivory Coast and coming to Maldives feels like a homecoming, says former star footballer for Chelsea and Ivory Coast, Didier Drogba.

Drogba is currently in Maldives as the chief guest of the final match of the Siyam-Mauroof Soccer Cup. The Siyam-Mauroof Soccer Cup is held for football clubs from N. Atoll.

Speaking to the media, Drogba said he was overwhelmed by the hospitality being provided by Maldivians during his stay in the country. He thanked the people of Maldives for their hospitality.

He made the comments to the media after enjoying the cultural festivities at N. Maalhendhoo ahead of the final match this Sunday.

Drogba said Maldivian culture was very similar to that of his hometown, and that visiting Maldives felt like coming home.

He commented that Maldivians were a kind-hearted and honest people.

He said he had heard of Maldives before from friends who have visited the country.

“I had heard of Maldives before. I’ve seen pictures taken by my friends from vacations here. I wanted to visit Maldives even then. I came here when I got the opportunity,” said Drogba.

The footballing legend was warmly welcomed by locals upon arrival at Maalhendhoo. Many flocked to take pictures with him.
