HM: Ban on unpermitted meetings with diplomats to ensure sovereignty

The ban on unpermitted meetings by local councils with foreign diplomats and agencies was imposed to ensure the maintenance of the autonomy and sovereignty of the nation, says Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed.

Azleen, who is also the President of Local Government Authority (LGA) made the comment during an interview on PSM’s Rajje Miadhu show last Thursday night.

Speaking during the interview, Azleen said the country’s foreign policy was determined by the government, and that local councils meeting and communicating with foreign diplomats may affect the country’s diplomatic ties.

“The country’s foreign policies and national policies can only be maintained without any clashes and without any negative effect on the home affairs of the country when things are done within the regulations and standards set by the government,” said Azleen.

The minister also expressed confidence the decision of the government to restrict councils’ meetings with foreign diplomats will not affect ties with any bilateral partner.

LGA has issued a circular banning any local councils or local councilors from meeting foreign diplomats and officials from international agencies without the permission of Ministry of Home Affairs.

“Local councils are an extension of government services. And the actions and transaction of the councils represent the Maldivian government,” read the circular.

The authority said that unchecked meetings by the councils with foreign diplomats and agencies could contradict Maldivian foreign and national policies as well as international declarations and agreements Maldives is part of.

All G. A. Atoll councilors have been penalized with a three-month suspension for meeting Indian Ambassador Akhilesh Mishra without permission.
