Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor’s doctor has instructed he be kept incarcerated in a dust-proof location.
Adeeb is has been sentenced to total 33 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple offenses – including conspiracy to murder the President as well as involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement scandal. He is currently being kept at the Dhoonidhoo Prison under police custody.
Adeeb’s lawyer, Moosa Siraj sent a letter addressed to Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef this Wednesday, saying the orthopedist at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital who Adeeb consulted with on November 1 had instructed him that the place he stays in must be dust-proof, and he must not lift any heavy weights.
Siraj said in the letter that the doctor gave the instruction after he discovered Adeeb’s eyes were infected due to dust.
The lawyer said the current cell Adeeb was being kept in provided no protection against dust, and that he had to lift water buckets multiple times a day to flush the toilet at the cell and to bathe.
He asked that Adeeb be transferred to house arrest so he may be protected from dust.
Adeeb has been diagnosed with glaucoma. And the doctor has warned his eyesight may worsen if he isn’t transferred to a dust-proof location, said Siraj in his letter.
