62 islands reported damages from the torrential rain and wind unleashed by Cyclone Ockhi, says National Disaster Management Center (NDMC).
In an interview to “Sun”, Director-General at NDMC, Sofeenaz Hassan said different islands reported varying degrees of damage from the storm.
“The islands faced varying degrees of damage. This includes islands which had trees uprooted, and islands which faced flooding. We also received reports of roofs being blown away due to the wind,” said Sofeenaz.
Sofeenaz said 36 islands reported flooding due to torrential rain, four islands reported flooding due to tidal swells, and 22 islands reported trees being uprooted.
“The atolls councils are sending us reports of the damage to islands even now. The extent of the damage as well as the details can only be disclosed after we receive the reports,” said Sofeenaz.
She said that none of the damage made any house inhabitable.
“Residents of some of the houses in the islands had to be relocated due to flooding. But they changed back to their houses once the water dried up and the houses were made habitable once more. There wasn’t a case where any house was rendered inhabitable,” said Sofeenaz.
