Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will tonight attend the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), formed to investigate the events leading up to the transfer of power, to provide information.
Spokesperson of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Mahloof said that Gayoom will attend the CNI between 22:00 and 22:30.
This is the first time that Gayoom provides information to the CNI.
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has attended the CNI on two occasions to provide information.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has also provided information to the CNI.
Nasheed had accused Gayoom of having been the mastermind behind the ‘coup’ which toppled the government.
He later apologised to Gayoom if this was untrue.
Today, President Dr Mohamed Waheed, by a decree, extended the deadline for the CNI to submit its report to 30 August 2012.
