Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has commenced a protest at the Parliament floor, following Thoddoo MP and MDP Parliament Group Deputy Leader Ali Waheed being named due to disorderly behaviour.
Ali Waheed declared that MDP was at protest at the Parliament floor following a debate on Aasandha universal health insurance programme, and regarding Police Commissioner Abdullah Riyaz’s statement that it is not possible to inform the Speaker of Parliament prior to taking MPs under arrest.
Ali Waheed and other MPs of MDP started creating unrest by raising points of order shortly after today’s Parliament session commenced at 10:30 this morning.
MDP Chairperson and Hulhu-henveiru MP Reeko Moosa Manik said that Police Commissioner Riyaz cannot make a decision which contradicts the Parliament Rules of Procedure, and called him extremely ‘dumb’ for having tried to do so.
“How dumb is he, to try and make this decision on his own, when it has already been decided by the Parliament? Does he want to bring the Star Force in here to beat us up? What a dumb, stupid person. We won’t stop until we remove him from his post,” Moosa said.
Subsequent to Ali Waheed being named, the Parliament session was postponed until he was removed from the Parliament chamber.
