Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Asim says he’s hopeful for peaceful reconciliation in the Korean peninsula.
Dr. Asim made the comment during the official reception held at Hotel Jen last Monday night to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic ties between Maldives and South Korea.
Asim said the ties between Maldives and South Korea was based on mutual trust and understanding. He said both countries wanted peace, and were concerned over issues facing one another. Asim said he was hopeful for peace in the Korean peninsula, and appealed for immediate cessation of any action detrimental to peace in the region.
He said the international community needed to work together to establish peace in the Korean peninsula.
“Both nations share concern over challenges facing one another. Maldives believes peace can be established in the Korean peninsula. Any action detrimental to peace must be immediately stopped,” said Dr. Asim.
The minister – who was chief guest of Monday night’s reception – noted a significant increase in the trade volume between Maldives and South Korea.
He said South Korea was an important bilateral development partner to Maldives, and noted the contribution by South Korea to technical cooperation programs – especially in key economic areas such as fisheries and infrastructure development.
The function was followed by cultural performances at the Alimas Carnival which showed Taekwondo – a type of Korean martial arts – demonstration by Kukkiwon and Boduberu performance by Maldivian band 1438 Boduberu.
