Large, modern harbor to be built at Kulhudhuffushi

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to build a large and modern harbor at H. Dh. Kulhudhuffushi.

Announcing the plans to build the harbor during Progressive Party of Maldives’ “Udhuhey” function at Kulhudhuffushi last Sunday night, Muizzu said it will be largest harbor in the country, once complete.

Muizzu said the harbor will be 1,100-foot in length and 500-foot in width. And that construction of the harbor will begin in May, 2018.

“This is not just any ordinary harbor. The harbor is designed with great thought and perfection, with vessels able to harbor at the outer seawall and finger jetties at the seawalls to the sides,” said Muizzu.

The housing minister said the project will be funded through non-reimbursable foreign aid, and that the project includes construction of a fish market and ferry terminal – which in turn will have shops and other business outlets.

“This is not all. It includes maintenance and capacity building programs on use of the harbor. The island council and relevant parties will be provided training and educated on the ways profit can be generated from the harbor. So, this makes the project the first of its kind in Maldives,” said Muizzu.

He said the State was running multiple development projects across the country.

“The people want President [Abdulla] Yameen [Abdul Gayoom]’s vision. The vision for development. This sound is resounding across the nation. We bear witness to it,” said Muizzu.
