Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Interim Vice President Umar Naseer has said that if elected in 2013, the PPM government would implement the death penalty.
Umar made this statement whiles speaking at the PPM rally at Artificial Beach entitled ‘PPM with Security Forces’.
“We will restore calm in this country. From Haa Alif Thuraakunu to Seenu Atoll – crimes such as murder, assault and rape will not be tolerated. We will implement the death penalty on those who commit murder. We will make social, economic, health and political changes for the people of Maldives.”
He said that it is time for politicians to dust themselves off and start campaigning for the election in 2013.
Umar said that his efforts ever since Nasheed became President were not successful until 7 February 2012, but on that day, he scored a ‘golden goal’; however, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will not succeed in toppling the current government no matter how much they protest on the streets today.
While the PPM rally was ongoing, MDP’s Direct Action protesters arrived at the scene, which was followed by the exchange of heated arguments using offensive language between the two groups.
They also threw objects at each other, but Riot Police soon intervened and controlled the unrest.
PPM has stated that a similar rally will be held every Saturday night.
