Minister Thoriq: In four years, 75 islands ran out of water

Minister of Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has said that 75 islands ran out of water in the past four years and that is the main obstacle to achieve sustainable development goals.

Speaking at the two day national conference with the organizations that work for sustainable development goals, Minister Thoriq said that the Environment Minister was charged with the SDG oversight last year and the country has achieved some advancement in achieving goal no. 7 of 15; Affordable and Clean Energy.

To achieve that goal, efforts are being made to ensure 30 percent of the energy used during the daytime is renewable energy. Under the project, Addu City has managed to have 30 percent of their day use energy be sourced from renewable energy.

Aside from SDG, the two day conference also discusses goals related to children, women, health and climate change. Acquiring funds for projects and networking among development bodies were discussed at the conference.

Over 100 organizations nation-wide took part in the conference. Speaking at the ceremony today, Home Minister, Azleen Ahmed said that CSO's play a huge role in achieving SDGs.

He said that organizations need to stay out of politics and work towards their goals regardless of the government in power.
