The Maldives United Opposition (MUO), a movement formed to combat President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s administration, is on the verge of collapse, says State Minister of Home Affairs, Shifaq Mufeed (Histo).
Speaking during the SunTV “50 Minute” show last Wednesday night, Histo said MUO had been thrown into conflict the moment former President Mohamed Nasheed called for the opposition to choose a transitional leader to compete in the upcoming presidential election.
“MUO is seen on the verge of dissent and collapse. We don’t know who among them they will all agree to as a candidate. I don’t think this will happen,” said Histo.
He said the opposition leaders’ words don’t meet with their actions. And that they were seen making comments that didn’t make any sense in order to appease their supporters.
He also criticized plans by some opposition leaders to choose a presidential candidate who wasn’t involved in politics. He said the transitionary period was over, and that a period of reform and development had begun with President Yameen’s administration.
“How can someone who is not a politician rule the nation? It’s a party which can rule the nation now, isn’t it? Its party candidates who are elected to political positions now, isn’t it?” said Histo.
