Five charged with murder of Anas remanded until end of trial

The five suspects charged with the murder of Mohamed Anas (Raa atoll Meedhoo), who was killed inside the Litus Service Center on 31 July 2017, has been remanded into police custody by the Criminal Court until the end of the trial.

The ruling was made at their remand hearing today at the Criminal Court along with the preliminary hearings.

Two of the five people, Usman Shareef (Malé City) and Ahmed Zayan (Lhaviyani Kurendhoo) are charged with first degree murder with a sharp object while the other three, Junaihu Abdulla (Laamu Gan), Hassan Mahfooz (Addu City) and Simaahu Moosa (Special Register 1746) are charged as accomplices.

At the hearing today, Zayan, Junaihu and Simaahu were given ten days to appoint attorneys. Only Mahfooz has appointed an attorney so far.

The Judge closed the hearing today after scheduling another hearing after ten days.

Aside from the five people, a 17-year-old minor is also charged with the same crime. Mohamed Siraj (Thaa Kimbidhoo) and Afrah Abdul-Razzaq (Malé City) who were arrested while hiding after the crime. However their cases have not been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office as the police are still investigating them.

The murder of the young boat captain, Anas was attacked by a group of masked individuals, at approximately 9:15 p.m. was caught on security cameras.

ADK Hospital said that he was dead on arrival.
