Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon – remanded to jail pending the outcome of his trial – has been transferred to house arrest.

Information officer at Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman reported that Faris was transferred to house arrest a short while ago this Wednesday evening.

He said Faris’ transfer to house arrest was only temporary, and that he would be transferred back to Maafushi Prison where he is being kept detained once maintenance of his cell unit is complete.

Faris has two charges against him; identity theft and bribery.

He was charged with identity theft for holding a press conference on behalf of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives after he was ousted from the party. And he was charged with bribery for allegedly offering a bribe to a fellow parliamentarian to influence the impeachment motion against Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.

Faris is a key member of the opposition and son of former Maldivian President Maumoom Abdul Gayoom.
