President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that we must listen to each other’s complaints, in order to restore peace and calm in the country.
The President made this statement during the welcome speech at the reception hosted by the President and First Lady Ilham Hussain on the occasion of Independence Day, held at the National Museum.
He said that we owe our country’s independence and development to the national services of our ancestors, and called on everyone to take a moment to reflect on this and thank them.
The President said that Maldives has always been a peaceful place, and despite the change in times, we hope to see similar days again in the future.
“These hopes and dreams can become reality. But in order to achieve that, we have to be more caring. We have to be compassionate, and give in to each other. We have to listen to each other’s complaints. We have to, especially, put the nation’s interest ahead of our individual interest,” he said.
The reception was attended by the Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, Ministers, Members of Parliament, State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, senior officials of Independent Institutions, leaders of political parties, senior officials of important industries of Maldives, and foreign dignitaries.
