Azleen: Gang violence needs to be stopped; any legal barrier abolished

Gang violence needs to be stopped at all cost, even if by abolishing any legal barrier which stands in the way, says Minister of Home Affairs, Azleen Ahmed.

Speaking in an exclusive interview to “Sun” regarding the recent wave of gang violence in Male’ City, Azleen said special operations were being conducted to stop the violence, and that every barrier would be overcome to solve the issue.

“We will work with PG [Prosecutor General] and AG [Attorney General] to abolish any legal barriers, if they exist,” said Azleen.

Azleen provided assurance the government would do everything necessary to stop gang violence. He said the police would receive assistance from the military, if need be.

“I assure the public, we will not back down from taking every legal measure necessary, whatever it may be,” said Azleen.

He said authorities were working on taking legal measures against criminals involved in gang violence and other major crimes. He said the police will file requests with High Court coming Sunday for tags and MoniCon Orders against 21 individuals.

“These tags won’t be on anyone innocent. Law abiding and productive youths will not be tagged,” said Azleen.

The Minister expressed concern over the sudden spike in violence after a period of calm.

“I appeal to the public to cooperate with the police,” said Azleen.

Two young men were stabbed in separate incidents on Friday night alone. One of the young men died while the other is admitted to the hospital.
