Qasim approved for ten days to go to Singapore

Leader of the Jumhooree Party, Qasim Ibrahim, currently serving as prision sentence, has been approved by the Maldives Correctional Service to go to Singapore for ten days.

Correctional Service has confirmed the ten-day approval for Qasim to Sun Media.

Information Officer of the Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugman told Sun Media tonight that the Jumhooree Party leader must be at the airport now and would be leaving to Singapore tonight.

The Jumhooree Party Leader has been in treatment for his heart condition at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for 13 days. He was sentenced, in absentia, to three years, two months and 12 days in prison while he was at the hospital.

Correctional Service had decided that Qasim would be serving the term of his prison sentence under house arrest. The decision was made because Qasim's condition was too poor for time in prison.

In the verdict against Qasim, the court ordered the authorities to allow Qasim to go abroad for treatment. The Attorney General has refused the ordered and appealed the court order.
