Two ex-Presidents

The Parliament Finance Committee has made the decision to examine how the privileges accorded by the State to former Presidents are being used.

A case was submitted to the Committee by Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem, requesting for an investigation to determine whether the privileges are being provided in the best way possible.

He said that the manner in which the privileges are being utilised by the former Presidents is questionable, and therefore should be investigated by the Committee.

Committee Chairperson Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim said while presenting the issue, that the first step is to determine the total amount being spent as privileges to former Presidents, and that a letter will be sent to Ministry of Finance to obtain this information.

The two former Presidents of Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed and Maumoon Abdul Gayoom currently accept the full privileges provided by the State.

MVR1.5 million has been provided by the State as privileges of former President Nasheed since he resigned in February 2012.
