Strict action should be taken against murderers of Police officer: MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said that people responsible for the murder of the Police officer in K. Kaashidhoo should be given the strictest possible punishment.

MDP strongly condemned the brutal murder of Lance Corporal Adam Haleem, 26, in a short statement released today.

They also called on law enforcement authorities to increase efforts to restore calm in the country.

MDP said that they are with Maldivians in mourning this tragedy.

MDP President Mohamed Nasheed also strongly condemned this crime via Twitter.

Meanwhile, several pro-government groups have accused MDP’s Direct Action protests of triggering this attack on a Police officer.

Vice President Mohamed Waheeddeen said last night that people of Maldives have gone astray, and that democracy no longer exists in the country.

He referred to MDP’s Direct Action protests and their attacks on law enforcement bodies, and said that they are attempting to obstruct the establishment of democracy in the Maldives.

Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has also strongly condemned the incident in a statement, and called for strict punishment for those responsible.

He also urged the authorities to look for reasons behind such attacks, and take action against those who encourage hatred, anger and violence in the society.
