Police: Eight people involved in Yaamin's murder

Maldives Police Service has revealed information on the investigation into the murder of the social media activist and blogger, Yaamin Rasheed.

This is the first time the police have revealed any information to the media regarding all those involved in the crime since Yaamin's murder on 23 April 2017.

Police have previously released the images of three suspects believed to be involved in the murder.

At the press conference held today on the murder, police shared information on all the suspects along with the places that were searched as part of the investigation.

Eight court orders were executed in the investigation and help was sought from the police of eight different countries. Police said that they have forwarded the case of the eight people arrested in the case to the Prosecutor General's Office.

While the police have said that the charges are pending against eight people, the Prosecutor General, Aishath Bisham told the media on 1 August 2017 that they have received the cases of seven people for prosecution in Yaamin's murder.

Talking to the press today, Superintendent Ahmed Shameem said that the police have seven of the eight suspects in custody and the other suspect is under house arrest.

But since the case is pending a criminal trial, police did not reveal the degree of involvement of the suspects in the murder.

The locations searched in the investigation, as revealed by the police today include:

- The residences of the suspects

- Fishermen's Park and the area surrounding the park

- The sea between Marry Brown and Villa College on Boduthakurufaanu Magu

- Swimming track

- Roads used by the assailants

- No. 1 waste disposal site

- Islands surrounding the capital in case those suspected may leave the city

Superintendent Shameem said that police have been working to get justice for Yaamin from the moment the murder was reported.

And responding to the accusation by some saying that the police tried to destroy forensic evidence, Superintendent Shameem said that all evidence collected in Yaamin's murder have been preserved in it's original form without any alteration.

He said that all the evidence used in the success of the investigation have been forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office.
