23 gang members arrested with weapons

Maldives Police Service has arrested 23 people from different street gangs with weapons and sharp objects used in gang attacks.

Facing criticism following the death of two young men in a series of gang attacks, police issued a statement tonight saying that they are running patrols in the city non-stop.

The police statement said that they found weapons and other tools used in the attacks at some of the locations they have searched and 23 gang members from different gangs have been arrested and the investigations are underway.

Police said that they are searching for the assailants involved in the attack inside the Terminal Café on Lonuziyaarai Magu and the Litus motorcycle service center. They said that special attention is being given to the investigations into the two deaths.

The people involved in the gang violence near Alcyon Bakery on 19 July 2017 were also arrested by the police and their details were later released to the public.

Assuring the public safety, the police statement said that they would use all of their resources to their full extent to ensure public safety and restore order.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Home Ministry earlier today, Home Minister Azleen said that the police is capable of putting an end to the violence and would not allow the peace to be disrupted.
