Majlis gates padlocked shut

The gates of the building which houses the People’s Majlis have been padlocked shut by the military.

The additional security measures came after the opposition coalition announced a Majlis meeting will be held this Monday.

When asked about the additional security measures, information officer at Maldives National Defense Force said the military was in charge of maintaining security at People’s Majlis, but that the question of why the gates have been padlocked should be directed at the Secretariat of People’s Majlis.

Secretary-General of People’s Majlis only commented that the security of the building was maintained by MNDF.

Secretariat of People’s Majlis announced last Sunday that the next Majlis sitting will be held on July 31. But the opposition coalition is arguing a sitting should be held this Monday, and the no-confidence motion against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed heard during the sitting.
