A no-confidence motion against Attorney General Mohamed Anil has been submitted to the People’s Majlis.
Secretary-General of People’s Majlis, Ahmed Mohamed informed “Sun” the petition was signed by 24 parliamentarians.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentarian, Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim reported he signed the petition because Anil was violating the Maldivian Constitution and laws.
Azim said there was no reason why Anil should remain in office, and alleged that he prioritized the welfare of a particular person over the general welfare of the State.
Azim said that though Anil claimed to have submitted the case to unseat parliamentarians who switched parties to Supreme Court on behalf of the people of Maldives, he had no claim whatsoever to represent the people. He said the people were represented, instead, by parliamentarians, elected by the people.
This is the first time for the opposition coalition to submit a no-confidence motion against a State minister.
According to a recent ruling by Supreme Court, even if People’s Majlis votes in favor of dismissing a State minister, the decision will ultimately lie with Supreme Court.
