Court orders Faris be detained pending outcome of trial

Criminal Court has ordered that Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Faris be kept detained pending outcome of his bribery trial.

Faris – son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom – stands accused of bribing fellow parliamentarians in connection with the petition for no-confidence motion against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.

Faris was transported from Dhoonidhoo Prison to Male’ City for his remand hearing this Wednesday morning. The court made its decision regarding his remand a little after 2 pm.

He was arrested from his residence – Ma. Snow Rose – under court order last Tuesday.

The police confiscated some items from his residence including a pendrive and some documents on Tuesday, and produced another search warrant to confiscate the hard disk of the CCTV camera of his residence this Wednesday.

Police Spokesperson, Ahmed Shifan said during a press conference that the authority had evidence Faris bribed fellow parliamentarians.

The case is still under investigation.
