MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon did nothing illegal or irregular and never will, says his father, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
Maumoon’s claim of his son’s innocence comes as police officers search Faris’ residence – Ma. Snow Rose in Male’ City – armed with warrants for both search of the apartment and his arrest.
In an interview with RajjeTV this Tuesday, Maumoon said Faris never attempted to bribe anyone and never would.
“Faris wouldn’t do something like that. I want to assure the people of the country of this,” said Maumoon.
Maumoon said all his children were honest and loyal. He said they had set out to reform the country, and not to bribe any parliamentarians.
Faris is under investigation for bribery of fellow parliamentarians in connection with the petition for a no-confidence vote against Speaker of People’s Majlis, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed – a petition which was endorsed by nine parliamentarians from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.
Police had claimed in an earlier press conference that they had evidence Faris bribed parliamentarians.
