LGA overrules sanctions against expats by Ihavandhoo Council

Local Government Authority (LGA) has overruled the harsh sanctions against expatriates by the Ihavandhoo Island Council.

Ihavandhoo Council decided on extreme measures against expatriates following an emergency council meeting regarding the alleged murder of a local man, Ismail Umaru (Isseh), Lhaviyani Hinnavaru by two expatriates.

LGA tweeted today saying that the decision by the Ihavandhoo Council is not a legitimate ruling and have asked to work with the Maldives Police Service to maintain peace on the island.

The decision made by the Ihavandhoo Council banned six main things for the expatriates living on the island.

They are:

- Implementing a 10 p.m. curfew aside from the work duties

- Public gathering in groups except for Fridays 2 - 5:30 p.m.

- No fishing in the Council jurisdiction

- Collecting coconuts, wood and other items from the island woods

- Banned from the beaches of the island aside from the waste disposal visit

- Uninvited attendance to events on the island

A 27-year-old Bangladeshi national arrested in connection to the murder has already confessed to the crime.

Authorities believe four other, all in custody, are involved in the crime.
