Adam Azim released after six days

Following his arrest for attempting to illegally overthrowing a legally formed government, the former Managing Director of the State Trading Organization (STO) Adam Azim has been released after six days.

His attorney, Noorusalam (Noor) Abubakuru told Sun Media today that his client was released without a hearing to make a decision on the remand.

Noor said that the Police informed them to today that Azim was being released after questioning and taking the statement needed and is now in the midst of being sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

Police questioned Azim following the remarks he made on Sungu TV’s “Khabarah Fahu” (After the News) program last Wednesday night.

After being arrested in the morning of 8 June, he had a remand hearing the next day at which the Criminal Court ruled for a remand of six days.

The court order for his arrest said that Azim was encouraging and supporting illegally overthrowing a legally formed government, attempting to create hatred and lack of confidence in the judiciary and spreading misinformation.

The order also said that he may attempt to influence evidence against him and releasing him might endanger the public.

According to the court order, the evidence against Adam Azim is an intelligence report.

Azim is the brother of the former Defence Minister, Colonel-retired Mohamed Nazim currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for possession of a firearm.
