The new mosque built at Dhoonidhoo for use by the officers of the Maldives Police Service working on the island and for visitors has been officially opened.
At a ceremony held on the island yesterday afternoon, the mosque was opened by the Home Minister Azleen Ahmed and the Minister for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Ziyad and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Saeed.
Dhoonidhoo is a penitentiary island close to the capital for a number people on remand and is visited by the public for different purposes. The new mosque on the island can accommodate 250 people in prayer.
About MVR 3 million was spent on the mosque built by the police from donations. Construction began last March.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the modern mosque built in a total of two months and 19 days, Home Minsiter Azleen said that the mosque is a symbol of love for the religion among the police officers and expressed his gratitude to the officers involved in the project.
Islamic Minister, Dr. Ziyad said that the foundation of building an muslim community is building mosques and the police is showing a great example to that. The Minister also noted the effort put in the senior officials of the Maldives Police Service to ensure their officers have love for the religion.
The mosque was built in collaboration of the Marine Police and the Central Operations Command of the Maldives Police Service.
