Verdict: Supreme Court will make final decision on all no confidence motions at the parliament

Supreme Court of the Maldives has passed a verdict saying that they would be making the final decision in all of the no confidence votes being taken at the parliament.

The court made the ruling in a verdict following a procedural case filed by the Attorney General’s Office.

The Attorney General’s Office requested no confidence votes can be taken with appropriate reason and only a vote taken on those merits to hold weight at the parliament.

The verdict from the Supreme Court today said that a no confidence motion cannot be taken without a valid reason or to achieve a political goal. And even if a vote is taken with legitimate cause, the final decision on the no confidence vote will be taken by the Supreme Court.

Delivering the verdict, the Chief Judge of State, Abdulla Saeed said that that the Maldives has a democracy with the three powers of state separate and the Constitution has to be defined without violating the ruling system.

At the hearing to deliver the case, the state prosecutor said that only the President reserves the right to dismiss a state minister without a reason and the state ministers answer to the President and the role of the parliament is make them responsible.

The state prosecutor said that the Supreme Court has ruled that the pillars of state cannot influence each other.
