2 arrested with narcotics worth MVR 1.6 million

Drug Enforcement Department of Maldives Police Service has made two arrests and seized narcotics worth MVR 1.6 million from two houses in Male’ City in a special operation.

DED’s Deputy Head Inspector of Police Aminath Suzy reported the special operation was conducted on April 25.

Suzy said the two suspects arrested in the operation were a 25-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman.

The two suspects have been remanded to 10 days in police custody.

“From the first house searched in the operation was found narcotics packing paraphilia, two digital needles, 17 empty film canisters suspected of having traces of narcotics, two bottles, a knife, a syringe, and a pack of plastic bags,” said Suzy.

From the second house, officers seized 1.1 kilograms of suspected cannabis, and 91 grams of other narcotics.

Street value of the narcotics seized from the two houses is estimated to be MVR 1.6 million.

The operation comes in the heels of the special operation in Male’ City on April 16 in which DED arrested a Maldivian and a foreigner and seized 1.3 kilograms of heroin – estimated to have a street value of 6 million.
