Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) has today submitted necessary documents for registration of the party to the Elections Commission of the Maldives.
PPM is a new political party in the process of formation, and the party is being founded by former President of the Maldives Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom. PPM would be registered in the name of Faarish Maumoon, the eldest son of Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom.
While registration documents of all previously registered political parties of the Maldives were received by Members of the Election Commission, many have noted that those of PPM were received at the Commission by a reception counter staff. The staff told Faarish Maumoon, who handed over the documents, that they would be given to the Secretariat and their decision would shortly be communicated to PPM.
According to the Maldives Regulation on Political Parties, a political party can be registered upon the submission of 3000 valid membership forms. PPM submitted 3600 membership forms today, becoming the fastest political party in the Maldives to meet the membership requirement for registration. PPM has collected the necessary amount of signatures in less than two weeks.
