The Foreign Secretary of India, Dr. S. Jaishanka currently visiting the Maldives a time of political upheaval, has made a courtesy call on the President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
The two discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries at the meeting held at the President’s Office this morning.
The President’s Office said that “the President expressed sincere appreciation for the continued support and assistance provided by the Government of India. President also expressed his firm commitment to further elevate existing relations through different avenues of cooperation. In this regard, the President noted that commercial relations between the two countries would further enhance the greater economic cooperation and development. Additionally, the President expressed confidence in the Foreign Secretary’s visit to the Maldives, which would expedite the implementation of the different areas of cooperation between Maldives and India.”
Indian Foreign Secretary thanked the President for receiving him and expressed pleasure for the opportunity to meet with the President and conveyed the good wishes from the President and the Prime Minister of India.
The President’s Office did not say anything regarding any talks about the political state of the Maldives.
President Yameen was accompanied by Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, Mohamed Naseer and the Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed.
The Indian Foreign Secretary was accompanied at the call by the Ambassador of India, Akhilesh Mishra and Joint Secretaries of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, Sanjay Panda and M. Subbarayuda.
Indian Foreign Secretary, S. Jaishanka arrived in the Maldives yesterday and left the country this evening.
The Foreign Secretary’s visit came at a time where two former Presidents, Maumoon and Nasheed, has formed an alliance bringing all opposition leaders together against the government.
