Leader of Jumhoory Party (JP), Maamingili MP Qasim Ibrahim has filed to appeal the court order to seize his passport.
Speaking to press, Masthoor Husnee – who is part of Qasim’s legal team – said they filed the appeal this Wednesday.
Masthoor Husnee said that the freedom to travel was a basic constitutional right, and how and when any constraint be placed on the right was clearly stated in laws and court rulings.
He said the legal team did not believe there was any reason why Qasim’s passport should be confiscated.
Masthoor said the legal team was working on taking any legal action possible regarding the issue.
Qasim was investigated for bribery. And the case has now been sent forward to Prosecutor General’s Office.
Qasim reported to press the allegation of bribery has raised against him due to comments he made during a function held at JP headquarters (M. Kunooz).
During the speech, Qasim called out for all JP members who left the party to join ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to return to JP. He said that if they returned to JP, they would be guaranteed JP’s ticket for the next People’s Majlis election.
Qasim said that anyone who took it as bribery was entitled to their own opinion, but that he had no intention of doing anything unconstitutional or illegal.
He was summoned to police headquarters on April 2 for an audio sample to conduct video analysis.
