Qasim’s passport seized

The government has seized the passport of the Jumhooree Party Leader, Qasim Ibrahim, preventing him from leaving the country.

Qasim’s passport was seized for the duration of one month following a court order issued by the Criminal Court.

His passport has been seized at a time where the Maldives Police Service is investigating alleged offering of bribes to MPs by the JP Leader.

With rumors of the case now being passed on the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG Office) to be taken to trial, an official from the PG Office has denied the rumors saying that there has been no case brought in against Qasim for prosecution.

The police investigation regarding the JP Leader is the alleged offering of bribes of MPs in his speech at Maafannu Kunooz on the night of 26 March 2017.

At an opposition event, Qasim said that the four opposition leaders would help anyway they can to get the MPs who vote against the Speaker, Maseeh, to get re-elected next term.
