Female May Day protester sentenced to 5 years is freed

Nasira Ali from L. Gan, sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a police officer during the opposition May Day protest in Male’ City in 2015 has been freed.

Information officer for Maldives Correctional Service, Ahmed Lugmaan reported to “Sun” that Nasira was released this Monday.

Lugmaan said Nasira was released with certain conditions as decided by the Clemency Board.

Video footage shows Nasira throwing an empty Coca Cola bottle at a police officer who lay fallen on the ground near Iskandhar School.

Nasira, along with multiple others involved in the May Day protest have been jailed.
