A man suffered serious bites requiring plastic surgery to replace flesh after being bitten by a shark accidently ensnared in a hook.
The man is Izzath Hassan, an employee of Nika Island Resort.
Izzath is a crew member of one of the resort’s boats which had been carrying tourists on a fishing trip last Monday when the incident took place.
He had been trying to rescue a shark accidently ensnared in a fishing hook when it bit his hand.
He was transported to Male’ City and is being treated at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
“He was trying to remove the hook when the shark turned around and bit his hand. The hand was severely injured. About three inches (of flesh) was bitten off. But it wasn’t completely severed,” said General Manager of Nika Island Resort, Abdul Razzaq Ali.
The hand was operated on and stitched by the hospital.
Razzaq reports Izzath needs to undergo plastic surgery to replace the flesh on his hand.
