Woman with fever in Eydhafushi suffers heart attack, dies

A 59-year-old woman from B. Eydhafushi admitted to Eydhafushi Hospital with high fever has passed away after going into cardiac arrest.

Eydhafushi Hospital reports Fathimath Najuma Moosa from Lily Park in B. Eydhafushi had a history of heart disease and respiratory issues.

Director of Eydhafushi Hospital, Ahmed Waheed said Najuma was admitted to the hospital three days back with high fever.

“She had high fever when brought in. But she had no fever the next two days. The doctor said she died from cardiac arrest,” said Ahmed Waheed.

He said Eydhafushi was currently in the middle of a viral fever outbreak, and that the hospital treated 15 to 20 patients each day with symptoms of viral fever.

Ahmed Waheed said that despite the high fever, it was uncertain whether Najuma was infected with the H1N1 influenza (swine flu) virus currently spreading across the country at an unprecedented rate.

Eydhafushi Hospital has the facilities to take samples to screen for the virus, but not the screening facilities itself – which is available from Male’ City.

Ahmed Waheed said the hospital has not sent any samples to screen for the H1N1 virus so far.

The number of people who have tested positive for H1N1 during the outbreak so far stands at 82 people.
