Candidates who applied to compete in the upcoming local council elections have been assigned their candidate numbers through draws and given the go-ahead to officially launch their campaigns.
Member of Elections Commission, Ahmed Akram reported to “Sun” that candidates competing for council seats in all Maldivian islands were announced their candidate numbers at 10 am, this Thursday, in respective island and atoll council headquarters.
Candidates competing for Male’ City Council seats were announced their candidate numbers in a function held this Thursday morning at the Elections Commission headquarters.
Akram said that will the assignment of candidate numbers, the candidates and political parties were now free to legally campaign for the council elections.
Local council election will be held on April 15, and candidates have the opportunity to campaign until 6 pm, April 13.
Vice President of EC, Amjad Musthafa attended the functions held to announce candidate numbers for G. A. Atoll Council.
Amjad appealed for cooperation from all candidates and political parties to ensure a free and fair election, and provided assurances EC will do the same.
