MUO to hold protest rally 24 March

The opposition coalition, Maldives United Opposition (MUO) has decided to hold a major protest rally in Malé City.

Speaking at a press conference at the MDP office today, the Deputy Leader of MUO and the Deputy Mayor of Malé City, Shifa Mohamed said that MUO and the joined political parties are concerned about the peculiar selling of Maldivian islands.

Deputy Mayor Shifa said that MUO has held discussions in the past two weeks and decided to take all measures to stop the sale of Faafu atoll or any portion of it.

She said that they are making all preparations to hold a large-scale protest rally in Malé City on 24 March with citizens from across the country.

While the Saudi King, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is set to visit the Maldives this March, Maldives Police Service said that they would put an end to any activity that dishonors foreign dignitaries visiting the country.

Yesterday, the Police executed a search and seizure court order at the MDP Hall and confiscated banners protesting the Faafu atoll project along with a number of fabric rolls.

The main concern by the opposition regarding the Faafu atoll project is that the government is keeping the details of the project under wraps. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said that the details of the project would be revealed once everything is set.
