MIRA gives a red-carpet welcome to its female staff

Female employees of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) were given a red-carpet welcome as they arrived at work this Wednesday morning with Commissioner General of Taxation Yazeedh Mohamed, senior officials from the office and all of MIRA’s male employees holding out roses for them.

Female employees of MIRA were asked to dress in national clothing when they arrived for work this Wednesday as it International Women’s Day, but were completely in the dark about the red-carpet welcome.

MIRA has 274 employees, out of whom 137 are female.

“I was very surprised. It was totally unexpected. I felt like I was receiving an Oscar award. This surprise was totally unexpected. I felt like an award-winner. I was trembling,” said Deputy Manager of Human Resources at MIRA, Aishath Nafsha.

The female employees said they felt appreciated and felt confident in their ability to succeed in work-life.

“I am so happy the institution proved females are respected and our work is appreciated,” said Officer Trainee Enforcement, Mariyam Nuha.

In addition to the red-carpet welcome, male employees decorated their co-employees’ workstations and treated them with lunch.

Spokesperson for MIRA, Mohamed Shahid said the event was an initiative my MIRA’s male employees to demonstrate the respect they had for women and the opportunity women had at the authority.

Many organizations celebrated the International Women’s Day, but MIRA’s celebration topped it all.

International Women’s Day is celebrated every March 8 to demonstrate the important role women played in society, the importance of involvement of women in national development, and raise awareness on gender biases and gender violence.
